History lessons can get a bad rap because of the stories that textbooks focus on. We are told about conquerors and settlers, but there are many critical moments in history that are often overlooked. If the social upheavals of the past few years have taught us anything, it’s that the story is more complex and nuanced than what we’ve learned in class and deserves attention, dialogue and reconsideration of the story that is being told.

Take a look at the following list to learn more about the story that is often overlooked in the classroom.

When you think of the history of Asian America, my bet is that Pearl Harbor and the internment camps are some of the historical events that come to mind. In From A Whisper to A Rallying Cry, author Paula Yoo explains how the murder of Vincent Chin in Detroit in 1982 re-energized the campaign for the rights of Asian Americans in that country. Racism against the Japanese was at an all time high in Detroit, the heart of the American auto industry. Workers needed an enemy to blame for the decline in well-paying jobs, and Japan quickly became the bad guy.
