Chris Eckert, President of Eckert’s Inc., says community is at the heart of everything they do on the farm. This is why the company announced in a press release today that it will begin accepting Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) payments through EBT cards, allowing visitors another way to get fresh fruits and vegetables when they visit the Belleville location (951 S Green Mt Road, 618-310-2758).
“From the very beginning, we have always strived to put more local produce and food into the hands of our community where it matters most,” Eckert said in the press release. “We now have the ability to deliver fresh, healthy food straight from the source to those who might otherwise have limited access. ”
The press release says the move comes after a successful partnership between Operation Food Search and Eckert’s, which has helped the nonprofit organization’s more than 200 pantries in the dual-state region. Accepting SNAP payments allows buyers in country stores to purchase fresh produce, meat, fish, bread and dairy products.
In addition to campaign stores, people can also use SNAP payments on “U-pick” products. However, guests must still purchase entry for access to the grounds. Eckert’s Garden Center will also accept SNAP benefits for purchasing seeds to grow fruits and vegetables at home. Residents of Missouri and Illinois are eligible.
The farm hopes to expand the benefits to its other locations in the future. Visit eckerts.com to learn more about using SNAP payments.
